CPA Firms Houston Alternative names when to meet
Meet when a decision is still open. A call after the year is frozen is a recap, not a plan.
Pick a seasonEarly in the year
January is for the first estimate and for looking at what December left behind. If the prior year is closed, the meeting is short and useful. If it is not, the meeting is about the catch up, and the estimate has to be honest about that.
We would rather spend that hour on the open items than on a tour of services. Bring the last statement you believe and the question that has been bothering you.
While the year can still move
Spring and late summer are when equipment, hiring, and retirement contributions can still change the result. A meeting then is about choices. A meeting in the following spring is about explaining choices you already lived.
You do not need a meeting every month if the close is quiet. You do need one when the books show a turn you did not expect, or when you are about to sign a lease, a loan, or a large purchase.
Hot humid summers and mild winters are the shape of the year along the Gulf, and anyone who works around air conditioning already plans for that heat. When a cooler week shows up along the Gulf, every Texan feels it, and we feel it too. We still ask whether the slow summer months were closed, or whether they are waiting in a pile.
What the meeting is not
The first call does not make you a client and it does not set a fee. It tells both of us whether there is work to scope. Twenty minutes is enough for that. The work itself starts in writing.
If you only want someone to press payday, this is the wrong meeting. Book the hour when the open month should be finished and the return should be written from those finished months.
What to bring to the hour
Bring the last month you believe, even if belief is shaky. A bank export for that month is better than a verbal summary. Bring the question you actually have, in one sentence. A lease, a hire, a large purchase, or a loan are the kinds of questions that belong in the hour. A tour of every account can wait for the engagement.
If you have a prior return, bring it. We will not rebuild your history on the call. We will see whether the return and your story match well enough to scope the work. If they do not match, the hour ends with a plan to look, not with advice built on the mismatch.
You do not need a slide or a formal package. You do need a way to share a file after the call if we agree there is work. The form on this page can hold that note before we ever speak. Use it if gathering the file will take you a few days.
What the hour is allowed to decide
The hour can set the order of work and the shape of the engagement. It can show that a catch up has to come before a return. It can show that one company is ready and another is not. It cannot settle a tax position that depends on months nobody has reconciled. We say that boundary out loud so the call does not feel like a dodge.
Bring the month you care about. If you care about December and the summer is still open, the hour goes to the summer, because that is the honest order. You can still say why December matters. A lender date, a sale of the company, or a household move are reasons we can plan around. A wish to feel finished is not a date.
You should leave with three things in writing. The months we believe we can close, the files still missing, and the work this practice is not offering. If one of the three is foggy, ask before the call ends. A foggy ending wastes the hour.
If you are also talking with a firm that signs reports, bring their letter. We read the part that describes the monthly work and say whether we can do that part. The signature stays with them. Splitting the work is ordinary, and the hour is a clean place to draw the split before either side starts.
Bring a phone number you actually answer. The hour is short, and a follow up question the next day is common. We would rather reach you while the files are still fresh than leave the scope sitting until the next week.
When you want to meet
Say which month you are in and what decision is still open.
You will be talking to the Steven Palmieri practice.
