CPA Firms Houston Alternative walks the open choices

Four choices show up in almost every owner year. We put them next to the open months.

Name the choices

Owner pay

How you take money out has to match the entity and the way the prior year was filed. A draw, a paycheck, and a reimbursement are not interchangeable labels. We pick the treatment, write it the same way each month, and keep the bank in agreement with that choice.

Changing the label in the last week of the year does not rewrite the transfers that already happened. If the pattern is wrong, we say when it can be fixed and when it can only be disclosed.

Estimates and timing

Estimates are computed from the closed months plus a sober look at what is left. We would rather send a smaller estimate you can fund than a heroic one that ignores the cash. The amount stays here until you have looked at it.

Equipment and retirement contributions have dates. Some can be made after the calendar year and still count. Some cannot. We name the date that applies to your facts. We do not recite a slogan.

The chili cook off that rides with the rodeo is a weekend Texans can all enjoy, pots and crowds and all. We enjoy that kind of weekend the way you do. We look at the same season and ask which equipment purchase is still a choice, and which one already left the bank.

What we write down

A decision that is not in the books will not survive until the return. If you choose to fund a contribution, the cash and the liability have to show it. If you choose to wait, the forecast should stop assuming the deduction.

Tell us which of the four is on your mind. We will say what the current months can support.

One month, four levers

Picture a month that already ties to the bank. Owner pay is either consistent with the prior months or it is a change you are choosing on purpose. An estimate, if one is due, uses that month and the ones before it, not a hope about December. A purchase either happened or it did not. A contribution either has a date you can still meet or it does not.

We write those four in a short note after the close. The note says what is still open and what has already left the bank. You can decide from the note without a long meeting. If one item is large, we get on a call. If all four are quiet, the note is the whole conversation.

The following month should show the decision. If you chose to take less cash, the transfers should show it. If you chose to fund a contribution, the cash should leave. A decision that stays in the note and never hits the bank did not happen, and the return will not pretend it did.

A purchase, a contribution, and a bonus

A purchase belongs in the month the item arrives and the bill is real. Ordering in December and receiving in January is a January event. We will not drag it backward to decorate the old year. If the year needs to show the purchase, the purchase has to happen, with a receipt the bank can meet.

A retirement contribution follows the plan's own date rules. We ask which plan you hold and when the cash can leave. If the cash cannot leave, the contribution is a wish, and wishes do not get posted. Otherwise the statements would promise a benefit the return cannot keep.

A bonus to you or to the staff is a payroll event when those people are on payroll. It needs a pay date and a withholding, and the cash has to match the report. Tell us which event you mean. We record that event and we leave the other one unposted.

Write the decision in one sentence we can file with the month. The truck arrived on the 12th is enough. We might buy a truck later is a note for another year. The sentence you are willing to stand on is the sentence the return will have to live with.

If two of these ideas collide, we show the cash effect of each and we stop. Buying the truck and funding the contribution in the same month can both be right, or only one can. The bank balance is the referee. We will not cheer for the choice that looks clever and leaves payday short.

Choices still open

Name the choice you are circling. We will say what the months can support.

You will be talking to the Steven Palmieri practice.
