CPA Firms Houston Alternative prepares the return
We prepare the return after the months tie, so the number you sign is the number the books already showed.
Open the returnThe return confirms the year
A return that surprises you is usually a year that was never closed. We do the opposite order. The months are reconciled first. The statements are written from those months. The return is the confirmation, with the elections and the adjustments that still belong in the year.
If a prior year was filed from books we have not seen, we read that return before we build the next one. We do not silently change a method. If something in the old year looks wrong, we tell you what we see and what reopening it would mean.
You sign the return. We prepare it. The engagement letter names which entities and which year. A second company, a late schedule, or a state filing outside that letter gets its own quote before anyone adds it.
What we need from you
We need the closed months, the forms you already received from banks and vendors, and answers to the few items that never got a category. We do not need you to recode the year in a spreadsheet of your own. If you have been tracking something we should see, send it and we will tie it to the bank.
Estimates you already paid have to match what the agencies show. We reconcile those payments the same way we reconcile a vendor. A missing estimate is a cash fact, not a rounding choice.
Hermann Park sits at the south end of the Museum District, with the zoo, the outdoor theatre, and the science museum on the same grounds. We can all appreciate that green space the way you do. We look at a finished year and ask which schedule is still missing before the return can confirm the months.
Timing without a scramble
March is comfortable when the books were closed all year. April is a date, not a rescue plan. If the year is open, we say whether an extension is the honest move and what the extension does not finish. The months still have to close.
Extensions are filed when you ask, and they are not a substitute for the reconciliations. We keep closing while the extended return is prepared. You see a draft that traces to the statements before you sign.
If you want the return in this practice, say which year and whether the months are current. We will tell you if we can prepare it from what exists or if the close has to come first.
Schedules that wait on the close
Some schedules cannot be drafted until the months agree with the bank. Depreciation needs the asset list to match what was actually bought. Owner pay needs the transfers to be labeled the same way all year. Estimates need the payments to match the agencies. We do not fill those schedules with placeholders and hope the close catches up later.
If a form arrives from a bank or a broker, we tie it to a month before it lands on the return. A form that does not match the cash is a question, not a number to type. You will see that question in plain words. Sometimes the form is early. Sometimes a deposit was categorized to the wrong year. Either way, the return waits.
The draft you review should read like the statements you already saw. If a line on the draft is new, we say why. A surprise at signing usually means a month was still open. We would rather delay the draft than ask you to sign a story the bank does not support.
Payments you already sent
Estimates paid during the year reduce the return only when the bank shows them leaving. A confirmation screen is weaker than a cleared payment. We tie each estimate to a month before it reduces what the draft says you still owe.
A tax payment coded as a vendor bill will not appear as a tax payment. The draft would then ask for money you already sent, while the books show a bill you do not owe. We look for those payments by amount and by the agency name on the bank line.
A state payment and a federal payment that left on the same day stay apart. Combining them makes one agency look overpaid and the other look late. The close is where that split is written down, so the draft is not a scavenger hunt through the bank file.
The return you need
Tell us the year and whether the months are already closed. We will say what has to happen before a draft.
You will be talking to the Steven Palmieri practice.
